What Are Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab grown diamonds, also referred to as engineered diamonds, synthetic diamonds, and lab diamonds, are genuine diamonds. They are cultivated in controlled laboratory settings using advanced technology to mimic the natural process of carbon crystallization into dazzling diamonds.

 

HOW ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS MADE?

Lab-created diamonds are made using one of two primary methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Both methods produce diamonds with identical chemical and physical properties to natural diamonds, but they allow for more control over the process, resulting in diamonds with fewer impurities and more consistent quality.

High Pressure High Temperature method (HPHT)

In this method, a small diamond seed, typically a natural diamond fragment or a synthetic diamond, is placed in a press where it is subjected to extremely high pressure and temperature. Carbon atoms in a molten metal catalyst dissolve around the diamond seed and then crystallize, layer by layer, onto the seed, forming a larger diamond. This process replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the Earth’s mantle.



Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

In this method, a thin slice of diamond seed (often a synthetic diamond) is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with a hydrocarbon gas, such as methane. The gas is then heated, breaking down the carbon molecules and allowing the carbon atoms to separate and settle onto the diamond seed, forming layers of diamond. This process mimics the way diamonds form in the atmosphere of gas giants like Jupiter.
